The Great Acceleration and the Anthropocene.  This lecture explores the scale, scope and pace of modern environmental change, and the reasons behind it.  In doing so, it presents two related concepts with which scholars and scientists have lately tried to understand global environmental changes: The Great Acceleration, both a process and a moment in global history, and The Anthropocene, a proposed unit of geological time.  The evolution of the world's energy system, demography, and international politics feature prominently.  The lecture is based on the revised book, Something New under the Sun, published in April 2026.

约翰·麦克尼尔（J.R. McNeill），当代著名环境史家、全球史家，美国文理科学院、欧洲科学院和摩洛哥王国科学院院士，现任美国乔治城大学校级杰出教授，曾任美国历史学会会长、美国环境史学会会长。国际地层委员会第四纪地层分会“人类世工作组”成员。代表作包括《阳光之下的新事物：二十世纪世界环境史》《蚊子帝国：大加勒比地区的生态与战争，1620—1914》《大加速：1945年以来人类世环境史》等，对全球环境史和人类世研究产生了重要影响。
